Dichloromethyltriethoxysilane (CAS 19369-03-0), also written as (dichloromethyl)triethoxysilane or silane, (dichloromethyl)triethoxy-, is a colourless transparent organosilicon liquid in which a dichloromethyl group is attached to a silicon atom bearing three ethoxy substituents. It is moisture sensitive and hydrolyses on contact with water or humid air, releasing ethanol and hydrogen chloride, so it is stored sealed under inert gas and handled with care because the hydrolysis products are corrosive and flammable. The ethoxysilane groups condense with hydroxylated inorganic surfaces and with silanol-terminated silicones to form siloxane bonds, while the two chlorine atoms on the methyl carbon provide reactive sites for substitution, elimination and further functionalisation. The compound therefore acts as an efficient bridge between inorganic substrates and organic or silicone phases.
1. Silane coupling agent: improves adhesion of organic resins to inorganic surfaces in composites, coatings, sealants and adhesives, and enhances filler dispersion and mechanical performance in filled polymer systems.
2. Synthetic intermediate: a precursor for other functional organosilanes, silicone resins, silane-based polymers and siloxane materials with tailored chlorine or alkoxy functionality for coatings, elastomers and electronic applications.
3. Surface treatment: used to modify silica, glass, quartz and metal oxide surfaces, introducing reactive chloromethyl sites for subsequent grafting of amines, thiols and other nucleophiles, and for preparing sensor, membrane and separation surfaces.
4. Handling and storage: corrosive and moisture sensitive, releasing flammable ethanol and hydrogen chloride on hydrolysis; keep sealed under inert gas in a cool, dry place, use anhydrous techniques, avoid contact with water, alcohols and bases, and quench spills with dry sand or dry chemical rather than water.
