Sodium 2-chloroethanesulfonate monohydrate (CAS 15484-44-3) is a water-soluble, crystalline alkyl sulfonate salt containing a reactive carbon-chlorine bond at the beta position, with a melting point near 292 to 296 degrees Celsius and a density of about 1.58 grams per cubic centimetre. It is a light orange to white solid that is thermally stable and easily handled in aqueous solution, and it is commonly supplied both as a solid of 98 percent assay and as an approximately 13 percent aqueous solution for direct charging to reactions. The combination of a permanently charged sulfonate group with a displaceable chloride makes it an efficient sulfonating agent, in particular a sulfoethylating reagent: under basic conditions nucleophiles displace the chloride and install a pendant anionic sulfonate group on the substrate.

Handling and storage: hygroscopic and moisture sensitive in the solid form with a high melting point; keep containers sealed and dry, avoid strongly acidic conditions that liberate the corrosive sulfonic acid, and observe good industrial hygiene because alkylating agents require careful containment and appropriate personal protective equipment.
