Sodium Carbonate
Sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃; CAS 497-19-8), commonly called soda ash in its anhydrous commercial form, is an inorganic sodium salt. Anhydrous grades are typically white, odorless crystalline powder or granules and dissolve readily in water to give alkaline solutions.
An established, high-volume industrial alkali and flux, sodium carbonate is used to manufacture glass and other sodium compounds, and in detergent formulations. It also serves in selected metallurgical and pulp-and-paper processes, and for pH control or neutralization in water and wastewater treatment. Its function depends on the process—such as fluxing silica-based glass batches, supplying alkalinity, or adjusting process-water pH—so selection should follow applicable material specifications and local requirements. This is an industrial chemical, not a medicine or nutritional product.
– Glass manufacture: Used as a flux in flat, container, and fiberglass production; it lowers the melting temperature of silica-based batches and can reduce furnace energy demand. Choose a grade meeting batch chemistry, impurity, particle-size, and handling specifications.
– Chemical manufacture and detergents: Serves as a sodium source and alkaline feedstock for products such as sodium bicarbonate, silicates, and phosphates. In cleaning formulations, it can supply alkalinity, assist hard-water control, and support surfactant performance; suitability depends on the formulation and applicable regulations.
– Metallurgy, pulp, and paper: Applied as an alkali or flux in certain metal-processing and refining operations and in pulp-and-paper process streams for pH or alkalinity management. These are process-specific industrial applications; verify compatibility, process limits, and the grade specification rather than assuming universal suitability.
– Water treatment and laboratory use: Used for pH adjustment and neutralization of acidic water or wastewater and as a general laboratory reagent for controlled analytical or formulation work. Avoid health, food, or personal-care benefit claims unless a specific grade and authorization support them. Dust or concentrated solutions can irritate eyes and the respiratory tract; consult the supplier SDS and applicable workplace rules.
