Tetrabutylphosphonium Chloride
Tetrabutylphosphonium Chloride (CAS: 2304-30-5) is a white to off-white quaternary phosphonium salt with a large, symmetric organic cation. The bulky cation gives the salt good thermal stability, low volatility and solubility in both water and polar organic solvents, which is why it is a standard starting material for ionic liquids and phase-transfer catalysts. It is also used to prepare phosphonium-based ionic liquids, catalysts for epoxidation and polymerisation, and as an electrolyte additive. The solid is hygroscopic and is often supplied as an aqueous solution for large-volume industrial use; the crystalline grade is offered at ≥96% assay.
• Ionic liquid synthesis: a cation source for tetrabutylphosphonium ionic liquids and molten-salt electrolytes.
• Phase-transfer catalysis: accelerates reactions between immiscible aqueous and organic phases.
• Polymer and resin catalysis: used as a catalyst or cocatalyst in epoxidation, condensation and curing systems.
• Electrolyte and specialty formulations: applied in electrochemical devices, antistatic agents and heat-transfer fluids.
