Thymolphthalein
Thymolphthalein (CAS: 125-20-2) is a white to off-white crystalline phthalein dye that behaves as a pH indicator, changing from colourless in acidic and neutral media to blue in alkaline solution over the pH 9.3–10.5 range. Because the transition sits above the range of most common indicators, it is particularly useful for titrations of weak bases, for alkalinity determination and for monitoring alkaline cleaning and industrial processes. It is also used as a colorimetric reagent, in teaching laboratories and in some indicator-based formulations. The powder is supplied at 98% purity and dissolves readily in alcohol.
• Acid–base titration: a visual indicator for titrations in the weakly alkaline pH 9.3–10.5 range.
• Alkalinity monitoring: used to check alkaline solutions in water treatment and industrial process control.
• Colorimetric analysis: applied as a reagent in spectrophotometric and indicator-based determinations.
• Laboratory and education: a standard indicator for teaching acid–base chemistry and preparing indicator solutions.
