Titanium(IV) Sulfate
Titanium(IV) sulfate (CAS 13693-11-3) is a white to off-white crystalline titanium salt that dissolves in water with hydrolysis to give strongly acidic solutions of limited stability unless sufficient free acid is present. Solutions tend to precipitate hydrated titania on dilution or heating. As a high-valent and strongly oxophilic metal centre, titanium binds oxygen-donor ligands avidly, which underpins its use in mordanting, tanning and as a precursor to titanium dioxide. The sulfate route is an economically attractive alternative to chloride-based titanium chemistry because it avoids the corrosive chloride emissions and equipment problems associated with titanium tetrachloride processing.
1. Pigment and titania precursor: an intermediate source of hydrated titanium dioxide and of titanium dioxide pigments used in paints, coatings, plastics, paper, inks and ceramics, and a starting material for titanium-based specialty chemicals.
2. Textile and leather processing: acts as a mordant in dyeing and printing to fix dyes on fibre through coordination to hydroxyl and carboxyl sites, and as a tanning or retanning agent that improves the hydrothermal stability and physical performance of leather.
3. Catalysis: used as a solid acid or as a precursor to titanium oxide and titanosilicate catalysts in esterification, selective oxidation, denitrification, epoxidation and fine organic synthesis.
4. Water treatment and other uses: a coagulant aid for potable water and effluent purification, particularly for fluoride and heavy-metal removal, and an additive in flame retardants, ceramics and refractories. Handle as an acidic, moisture-sensitive material, store in sealed containers and avoid contact with alkalis.
