Titanyl Phthalocyanine
Titanyl phthalocyanine is a titanium-oxygen phthalocyanine in which a Ti=O unit sits at the centre of the macrocycle, supplied as a blue to dark blue powder at 98% purity.
The titanyl centre gives the molecule strong absorption across the visible and near-infrared range and, in the correct crystal phase, very high photoconductivity and charge-generation efficiency. Those characteristics have made it the workhorse photoconductor in laser printer and photocopier drums.
The powder is stable in air but should be stored dry and closed, away from strong acids that can demetallate the ring, and it is light-sensitive in the presence of oxygen, so protection from prolonged illumination is recommended.
• Organic photoconductors: the charge-generation material in OPC drums for laser printers, copiers and multifunction machines.
• Near-infrared absorbers: used in security inks, laser marking and optical filter layers where absorption beyond 780 nm is needed.
• Organic electronics: applied as a donor or sensitising layer in photovoltaic cells, phototransistors and image sensors.
• Photocatalysis and sensor research: studied as a visible-light photosensitiser for oxidation reactions and for gas-sensing devices.
