Tributylphosphine
Tributylphosphine (CAS: 998-40-3) is a colourless to pale yellow tertiary phosphine liquid with a characteristic, unpleasant odour. The three butyl groups make it strongly lipophilic and electron-rich, so it is both a good ligand for transition metals and a mild, selective reducing agent. In practice it is used to reduce azides and ozonides, to convert alcohols into halides, and to prepare phosphonium salts and phosphine oxide derivatives. The liquid is pyrophoric when exposed to air in bulk and is therefore supplied and handled under inert gas, but its reactivity is predictable and easy to control in solution. It is offered at 98% purity with low phosphine oxide content.
• Reduction chemistry: selectively reduces organic azides to amines and cleaves ozonides under mild conditions.
• Ligand synthesis: used to prepare transition-metal phosphine complexes and catalyst systems.
• Phosphonium salt and ylide preparation: a reagent for Wittig-type transformations and phase-transfer catalysts.
• Organic synthesis support: applied in deoxygenation, dehalogenation and sulfur-extrusion reactions at laboratory and pilot scale.
